The Wimbum Canada Youth Podcast Project was created to provide young people with an opportunity to develop digital media skills while sharing their ideas and perspectives on topics that matter to them. Through a series of interactive workshops, participants learned how to design, record, edit, and publish podcasts.
Although several enthusiastic youths joined the project at the beginning, some participants were unable to continue throughout the entire program. Despite this challenge, the project successfully introduced participants to the fundamentals of podcast production and provided valuable hands-on experience in planning and producing digital content.
Workshops
Participants attended a series of workshops that guided them through the complete podcast creation process.
Design and Planning a Podcast
This workshop focused on the basics of project planning and podcast development. Participants learned introductory project management concepts, including how to create Gantt charts to organize tasks and timelines. They also explored the key elements involved in launching a podcast, such as selecting a topic, writing a podcast description, determining the format, choosing a name, designing artwork, and selecting theme music.
Recording and Editing
In this session, participants were introduced to the fundamentals of recording and editing podcasts. The workshop covered the tools and software commonly used in podcast production, as well as practical strategies for improving audio quality. Participants also learned how to prepare their recordings for publication and share them online.
Outcomes
The project resulted in the production and publication of three podcast episodes exploring topics related to culture and online safety. These podcasts were created by the participating youths as part of their learning experience.
To avoid recurring hosting costs, the project team opted to host the podcast on a free platform with some limitations. The podcast is available on Podbean, where listeners can access the episodes:
https://wicudacanada.podbean.com
The platform will remain available for future use by the young participants or other youths involved with WICA. This will allow them to continue producing podcasts on topics related to culture, Wimbum history, community experiences, and other areas of interest.
For the first podcasts, participants were encouraged to focus on topics of their choice—subjects they felt comfortable discussing—so they could build confidence while developing their communication and technical skills.
